Partnering with your Nervous System psycho-educational and support group at JFS

Updating you on What I’ve Been Up to:

I am now certified in Somatic Experiencing and in Integral Somatic Psychology, schools of practice I consider the leading edge of trauma healing techniques and understandings.  For those of you who don’t relate to the word ‘trauma’, these are the approaches that heal anxiety, panic, depression, rage issues, feeling trapped in indecision or lack of motivation, i.e. symptoms of a nervous system wired in ‘fight, flight, freeze’.

I was getting more calls from people seeking the services that I could take on in my practice, and also calls from people who couldn’t afford private practice.  I collaborated with Greenwich Jewish Family Services to offer their therapists a 9 cec training in the techniques, and launched a 6 session group with two of the therapists to continue the training, and those two therapists are now running an ongoing group (call JFS for info).

To The Shocked And Saddened Trump Supporter: The Healing of the Soul Of America Is Calling You

It is now UNDENIABLE that the movement Trump has been calling his base, is a movement of domestic terrorists seeking to collapse our system of democracy, and install a Nazi regime.

Hate groups in the U.S. have been proliferating in reaction to a Black man being elected president, but it is Trump who has used his presidency to empower, and galvanize, the hate groups into a heavily funded domestic terrorist movement he could count on as his ‘base’.

This has been overt and in our faces from the very beginning, with Trump making Steve Bannon, the publisher of Breitbart News, a hub for the nazi movement, his Chief Whitehouse Strategist, with highest national security clearance, to empower not only our domestic hate groups, but also hate groups, and authoritarian regimes, around the world.  Yet, many single issue Trump supporters have been blind to the agenda.

I watched in horror and grief, terrorists attack the Capital, brutally beating police, looking to find and assassinate some of our leaders, a siege that succeeded in occupying our Capital for several hours, terrorizing our leaders and their aides, injuring many, and tragically taking 5 lives.  All this at the invitation, and insistence, of President Trump and his allies.

I know that there are Trump supporters who also feel horror at the images of the violent coup, and the planned assassinations.  I am hoping there are a lot of such people, people who are feeling ‘how could I be so blind when their goals are so publicly stated?’ e.g. the rage they’ve stoked that we should feel towards an organization they call ‘Antifa’, meaning anti-fascism.  Why would you be against anti-fascists?? Aren’t all Americans anti fascist?  It turns out that there is no such organized movement, but you are one of the Americans they succeeded at getting to be against ‘anti-fascists’.

Opening to the truth is a painful process, as to open is to open against the lies that closed you to the truth, but that opening is exactly where your healing, and the healing of America lies.  As you open against the lies that closed you to the Truth,  you become aware that violence is only one part of their strategy, and see clearly that they’ve been absolutely effective in collapsing so much in our country, in their mission of spreading the practices that would most spread covid, most devastate

American families, communities, and economy.  Because of our vast resources, the U.S. was best positioned to protect Americans and minimize the damage; instead the practices promoted by this movement, with Trump’s leadership, have made the American people the most devastated by covid, with the highest number of cases despite only representing 4% of the world population.  This is the effect of the countless super-spreader events held by the President and the movement of fascists he has adopted as his ‘base’.

I believe forgiveness within your own skin happens from shifting from a sole value on ‘me’ (e.g. framing a mask requirement as an infringement on my personal freedom) to a value on ‘me’ as part of the ‘we’ (e.g. a mask requirement is a life saving emergency response to catastrophe, a minimal contribution on my part, to what it will take to overcome the catastrophe).  An amends for the ‘we’ would be for you to dive into the practices that protect from covid/minimize the spread.  To continue your journey of waking up start getting information from sources different than the Trump base you’ve been getting information from.  Read ‘On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Century’ by Timothy Snyder, or any of the many books that have come out sounding the alarm on the tyrannical agenda of Trump, and of his base.

If you are uncomfortable with what you’ve been supporting/believing in, exalt at finding out you are not one of them, and leap to be part of generating a more just, compassionate, and thriving America.  That discomfort is your opening in hearing the Call for Healing from the Soul of America, and if you let it, opportune a turning point towards a healthier belonging in your life.

For opening to the Truth is how you will be set free to be who you are meant to be in our world.  Standing in Truth is what has you become part of the solution, rather than a witting or unwitting perpetrator of hatred.

When The GOP Became An ADDICT

When The GOP Became An Addict

In 1987, Ann Wilson Schaef wrote ‘When Society Becomes An Addict’, describing how the dysfunctional way of processing we call the addictive process, can rule not just individuals and families, but organizations and communities, and indeed is prevailing in how we are operating as a world.

In 2008, the GOP adopted the strategy to vote as a block against anything the new president, Obama, proposed.  Once the GOP adopted that strategy,  it, and they, became an addict, i.e. operating from, and spreading the addictive process.

The healthy way of processing is through the heart.  Our thoughts and decisions are filtered through an awareness of the effect on ourselves and others, for us to make decisions that can work to support thriving for all involved. The addictive process bypasses the heart, and operates from a concept of what life ‘should’ be, rather than a lived experience of how life works.  When decisions made create problems, the addict doesn’t go back to the heart to figure out what he/she didn’t account for, as the heart was never involved in the processing.  Instead of learning, the addict simply blames the negative result on another, and continues rigidly in the decision that is not working.

Ms. Schaef gives as an example that we are on the eve of unsustainability as a people (1987), killing our elephants and destroying our rain forests, operating from the ‘concept’ that what matters is profits, and setting ourselves and our children up to not have breathable air, or habitable climate.

We elect our representatives, to do just that: represent the needs of his/her constituents.  To do so the member of congress would have to consider each item in relationship to the good it would bring to the constituency.  Instead you had Republicans who had formerly, or even still, represented the needs of veterans, who would vote against measures that would be helpful to veterans, simply because the measures were introduced by the Obama administration.

Because the decisions made in an addictive process do not work, the strategy relied on is one of ‘power over’ where adherence is forced on the people one has power over.  Decisions made in the healthy process are made to work for those involved, so when things don’t work, the strategy used is ‘in relationship with’, i.e more discussion, more listening, trying to find what might work better.  Learning, evolving, is the result.

The addictive process is ultimately fatal if not stopped.  Ms. Schaef asks how many more bottoms do we have to hit to wake up, and will we wake up in time to save ourselves from annihilation.

I ask, will the GOP wake up, or continue as the cult it is operating as, until it destroys our democracy.  That we just witnessed an armed insurrection provoked by the cult GOP, is demonstration of how close it is to willfully destroying our democracy.  A sitting president inflamed and ultimately ordered the insurrection; that any member of congress would debate that this is an impeachable crime, is testimony to the cult mentality that has stripped those members of congress of any rational thought, and certainly identifies those members as a threat to democracy, who themselves should be removed from office for their complicity in such a traitorous act.

What we are seeing since the insurrection is corporate donors stepping in, removing their sponsorship of moc’s who instigated the insurrection.   We have Dominion Voting Systems suing Giuliani for 1.3 billion for spreading the lie the election was rigged and their voting machines part of it. So far it has had

limited effect on healing the mindthink of the GOP, as reflected in any Republican member debating whether an attempted hostile coup by a sitting President is an impeachable offense.

But where is the Voice of whatever constituent Republicans are left who have not been brainwashed into complicity with the insurrection?  The loudest such Voice is the mass exit of lifelong Republicans from the Republican party.  But we need Voice from the constituents still in the Republican party who are horrified by the successful invasion of our Capital, by White Nationalists flashing their Nazi pride.  Help your Senator  have this be his/her ‘bottom’. Help him/her wake up to his integrity and start on a path of recovering from the Addictive process, from the hold cult mind has had, and operate from his/her own unique genius, heart, and mission, as a Senator and defender of our democracy.  Contact your senator and demand that he/she see the ordering of an invasion of our Capital by domestic terrorists who planned to assassinate some and kidnap others of our leaders, and who brutally beat our police, beating one to death, as an impeachable and criminal act.  Are you aware that the 10 Republican representatives that voted for the impeachment did so under having to fear for their lives?? That they received death threats for doing so?? Your Senator needs your support to act his conscience.

As for Democrats, no one puts more pressure on Democrats than other Democrats to reach across the aisle for bipartisan partnership in policy making.  Democrats have a strong value on inclusion of voices.  However, when one party is discussing and listening to try to find a workable solution, and the other party is not authentically involved in that effort, because they are pushing power for the sake of power or profit, to be delaying policy to try to work with the Addict GOP, is enabling their agenda not yours, the enabling of giving money to the conman.

Biden is all about bipartisanship.  I am glad he is, indeed this is what makes for a healthy society: inclusion.  But I do not want Biden to be enabling the conman.  It is imperative we get out from the grip of Covid, and also imperative that we mitigate the peril of climate change that has already taken so many lives and destroyed so much through fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, overwhelming blizzards, tornados etc.  This is not debatable in science or in human lived experience: that the GOP continues to find it debatable is a reflection of how deteriorated their thinking is from their addiction.  AA calls this “stinkin’ thinkin’ “.

If you are a registered Republican, horrified by the attempted coup, demand right action from your senator in the impeachment trial.

    Our democracy needs you to.

If you are a registered Democrat, understand there can be no inclusion of those looking to prolong Covid or exacerbate climate change,(for whatever their secret agendas might be), in policy seeking to remedy those crises.  And support Biden in discernment, that he bring his aspiration of bipartisanship to those serving free from the Addict GOP mindthink.

IN SUPPORT OF POLICE AND THE #BLACK LIVES MATTER SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT

    September 7, 2020

In this Day, civil rights is poised to make a leap, through the tremendous energy and involvement of activists in the Black Lives Matter movement.  We are and have been in the middle of the greatest grassroots movement in history, under many banners, climate change, womens’ march, million man march, ending mass incarceration, the fight against unsafe gmos in our food supply, LGBQTI rights, labor rights, livable wage, healthcare, housing, and so much more.  Sounds complicated, but make the policies that address the well-being of the Black single mom, and you will have addressed the issues that correct the larger umbrella of social justice issues.

So for me, there is absolute solidarity in moving towards a more just, compassionate, and thriving, world, even as we work out our best strategies and individual differences.

For a while, there was a #BLM encampment in my town (Stamford, CT), and I am a strong supporter, actually I feel #BLM is supporting me in my life long mission!  However, ‘disband the police’, is not a slogan that I align with, even though the demands behind that slogan are ones I support.

I support helping police departments rid themselves of their dysfunctions, some self-imposed, and some that we impose upon them.  We have placed issues like under-age drinking, that had all along been handled in the domain of the ‘family’, or acting out in school historically handled in the family and educational domains, into the criminal justice domain; domestic violence, suicide threats, and mental health crises that belong in the mental health domain,  addiction that belongs in the substance abuse domains, homelessness that belongs in the housing domain, have all been put in the criminal domain, having the police to respond to as first responders.  In so doing we have made of Americans 25% of the world prison population when we only comprise 4% of the world population.  We need to relieve our police of having to handle issues that are beyond their expertise, and have mental health and social workers be the first responders to these situations, with police when needed as escort, but not as the primary interventionist.

As I walked away from the encampment, I saw a lone man, carrying a sign, walking on mission towards the encampment.  The sign read ‘End Violence,  Fund The Police’.  It hurt my heart.  Was he a police officer? Was he the father of a police officer?  Was he the brother of a police officer who has cancer now from coming to the rescue in 9/11?  Or who was part of the call to  a school shooting? Or of any of the so many calls to police to come to the rescue?  I am so grateful for our police, I have no wish to be hurting the dignity of so many of our police officers.

However, I see that it is the police culture itself, that insists that we identify our massive number of police officers with the sadistic and racist murderers among them.  I am a psychotherapist, when it makes the papers that a psychotherapist, or a doctor, or a teacher, has sexually assaulted a child, our associations don’t stand united behind that person; indeed we are as horrified as the general public of the perversion of trust.  But when a video shows a police officer in pathological cruelty murdering a Black person, the union and the department itself, stands up in defense of the sick act and perpetrator.

I think forcing your good police officers to have to stand behind an obviously sadistic murderer among them, is a disservice to the good officer’s integrity, and to the integrity of the department.  I imagine many police officers are in therapy trying to extricate themselves psychologically from what their department is insisting they stand behind.

So police officers, take a knee, join the movement, to make the changes in the police culture, that would free you of having to identify with the pathological  sadists among you, and allow you to join in the effort to leave in your hands what belongs in the criminal domain, and relieve you of what is best served in other domains.  Let’s work together on figuring that out.

I was born in the fifties. I was a child in a time when police were community police, not militia.  A police officer would take a drunk teenager to his home and talk to his parents, not arrest him and threaten the parents with arrest even though they weren’t aware of his drinking, as is the practice now (we the public are responsible for having made the current laws).  Police uniforms were something of pride, not the militarization that today makes police appear as an enemy rather than protector of the community.   We as community members need our friendly, committed to community well-being, police back.  And I believe our police need that ‘we’re all on the same side’ serving the community feeling back as well.

The moment of devastating crises calls for us to generate a more compassionate, just, and thriving world.  Are you in??  I hope so.  I hope we are ALL IN.

Calling All Americans To End The Atrocity of Serial, Mass, Child Abuse: LightsforLiberty.org

    June 26, 2019

I am a licensed social worker, and by law mandated to report child abuse I am aware of.  When a report of suspected child abuse is made, the current practice is to immediately remove the child, and its siblings, from the home.  The belief is that if the parents have an abusive mindset, that the other  children are also not safe in their hands.  An investigation is done, interventions made, and the children are not returned to their parents unsupervised until the Department of Children and Families determines that the parents have, through the interventions, become parents who can keep their children safe.

Personally, I don’t agree that removing the children immediately, always, is the best approach, as in many cases the children are more traumatized by the separation from parents and each other, than by the reported abuse.  Indeed in 1979-81 I worked under a grant experimental program in NYC, to see if interventions could be successful while leaving the child in the home, in families where a multi-disciplinary team made an assessment that the child would be safe from further abuse in doing so.  However, I am not aware of such an approach being adopted in NYC or in CT where I now live, and I do know that the practice of immediate removal is the prevailing practice across the country.

Therefore, as a mandated reporter I here report Sarah Fabian, the DOJ lawyer who has defended the policy of denying migrant children soap, toothbrushes or toothpaste, kept for weeks in clothes they’ve peed in or are otherwise filthy, and made to sleep on cement floors (including babies) as ‘legal’, arguing that the Flores Settlement that mandates that children in U.S. custody be kept in ‘safe and sanitary conditions’ doesn’t specify they must be afforded soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, clean clothes, and the ability  to sleep, i.e. beds.

If Sarah Fabian needs a law to specify that ‘sanitary’ means showers with soap and water, the ability to brush their teeth, and have their clothes clean of filth, then any children in her home would be unsafe, and should immediately be removed, until Ms. Fabian can go through a re-education process.  Also, anyone who witnesses serious abuse of a child and allows it to happen is also prosecutable, so I report all legislators who are supporting this policy, indeed who are not actively fighting it, as equally unsafe in their parental ideology and their children need to also be immediately removed.  If in doing so, suddenly a whole lot of our people in power reverse their stands and acknowledge that sleep, and hygiene, fundamentally define safe and sanitary, 1. Then let them end the atrocity, and 2. Then we know clearly that shocking ignorance was not the source of the abuse, rather it is a hate crime based in racism.  President Trump, William Barr, Kirstjen Nielsen, and all the others responsible, need to be immediately arrested for the serial, life-threatening, and in some cases fatal, abuse of children, along with the kidnapping of thousands of children that they have no way of returning to their parents.  President Trump and his accomplices need to be tried for crimes against humanity.

I’m not alone in the demand to stop the abuse, and hold the government accountable.  On July 12, Lights For Liberty, a call to all Americans to band together to end the atrocities, is holding vigils around the country and at the detention sites so that all of us can come together and end the torture of children in our hands.  Hug your kids, and your grand kids, and come join us, lightsforliberty.org
